This past February’s Black History Month saw several philanthropic foundations announce increased support for racial equity efforts, as sector leaders and advocates sought to deepen conversations around Afrolatinidad, white supremacy and grantmaking to Black-led organizations and movements.
Yet the question remains: Is this interest episodic or part of a more sustained shift?
This Thursday, March 4 at 1 p.m., ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) will host “Strengthening the Infrastructure for Black-led Social Change,” a public conversation on how philanthropy can help realize a more just and equitable world beyond Black History Month.
Speakers featured on the webinar include:
- Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, founder and president, National Birth Equity Collaborative.
- Karundi Williams, executive director, re:power.
- Raymond Pierce, president and CEO, Southern Education Foundation.
- Nana Gyamfi, executive director, Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
Among the issues that leaders will look to address: How are the needs and imagination of Black communities being centered in these commitments? What kind of support do leaders on the frontlines say is still necessary to improve Black lives?
And what role do those outside the sector – grassroots activists, elected officials, community residents – play in holding foundations accountable?
The discussion will be livestreamed on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and can be accessed here. Those interested in attending can also sign-up here to receive an email or text reminder the day of the event.
ASL Interpreting Services will be provided by First Choice Interpreting Svc, LLC.
About ABFE
ABFE is a membership-based philanthropic organization that advocates for responsive and transformative investments in Black communities. Partnering with foundations, nonprofits and individuals, ABFE provides its members with professional development and technical assistance resources that further the philanthropic sector’s connection and responsiveness to issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. Established in 1971 as the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the all-volunteer organization was credited with many of philanthropy’s early gains in diversity. It since has evolved into a fully staffed, influential network. In 2013, the organization shed its descriptor and adopted the simpler ABFE (ab-fee) to better reflect its broadening membership.
